LONDON, ON: National Team athlete Sheryl Preston of North Delta, B.C. is in London Health Sciences Centre, Victoria Campus, recovering from injuries after an accident early Saturday morning. Preston was cycling to the London Training Centre (Doug and Sam Wells High Performance Centre) at Fanshawe Lake when she was hit from behind by a car. Preston's clavicle is broken in three places and she has injuries to her lower leg. She was wearing a bike helmet and Preston believes the helmet prevented more serious injuries.
"On behalf of Rowing Canada and its members, we wish Sheryl a full recovery," said Alan Roaf, Rowing Canada High Performance Director. "We know that she has excellent care, and our thoughts are with her during this difficult time."
Preston, 29, was a silver medallist at the 2004 World Championships in the lightweight women's quad, and was recently in Lucerne, Switzerland, at the World Cup rowing in a lightweight double with teammate Melanie Kok of St. Catharines, Ont. Preston was a candidate for the 2005 World Championship team, and it is not yet known what long-term effects the injuries may have on her athletic career.
